Ms.Fadzillah Md.Desa is one of our lucky recipients who received a prosthetic leg from the sponsorship by Sri Kuala Lumpur International Primary School.
He graduated from University of Bradford, UK with a B.Eng. Hons. in Mechanical Engineering, followed by MSc. and Ph.D. in Bioengineering from University of Strathclyde,UK. My research interests are quite wide-ranging under the general umbrella of biomechanics. However, his main interests are the measurements of human movement, prosthetics design, the development of instrumentation for forces and joint motion, and the design of prosthetics, orthotics and orthopaedic he is an established academician and a practicing engineer.
To-date he published more than 200 articles in ISI high impact journals and authored 3 engineering academic books (Motion Analysis System An Integrated Approach (2009), Motion Analysis System (2001) and An Integrated Approach for 3D Model (2010).
Prior to joining UM in 1996, he worked as M&E Engineer in construction Industries. he actively involved in many consultancy projects, especially in the field of biomechanics and biomechanical engineering and acted as principal investigator in industrial projects with a number of reputable international and national organizations and also the board member of the University of Malaya Consultancy Unit.
He won many awards and recognition from various organizations. Among the best awards, In 2004 he received BLESMA award from ISPO UK NMS in recognition of my significant contribution to the development of the prosthetic socket. In 2013, he received “The Forchheimer Prize” the most prestigious prize in the field of Prosthetics & Orthotics from International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics, for his research contribution to the world of prosthetics. He currently the Dean of Engineering and also the Director of Centre for Applied Biomechanics and the Coordinator of Motion Analysis Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya
He also a Professional Engineer (PEng) with Board of Engineer, Malaysia, Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.) and Fellow (FIMechE) with The Institute of Mechanical Engineers, UK, Chartered Professional Engineer (C.PEng) and Fellow (FIEAust) with Engineers Australia and also Fellow for Academy of Sciences Malaysia (FASc).
He has taught in the fields of biomechanics, prosthetics and orthotics and in the broad area of mechanical and biomedical engineering. He has extensive experience in PhD supervision and in examination of local and international higher degree theses and supervised to completion 20 PhD and 26 Masters students.
He received over RM16 million in collaborative research grant support and completed within the time frame allocated without any compromise on quality and it is on the assessment panel of national and international granting bodies. The output of the projects is documented in the form of publications, patents, theses and prototypes. He has also participated in various research exhibitions held locally and abroad and have won many medals. He has also filed 12 patents in Malaysia and 2 patents international as a result of my innovation. He has contributed to knowledge and guided people in this diverse field of biomechanics. He has established an extensive network with peers and experts from many top-notch universities. throughout the world including Strathclyde University, Calgary University, Melbourne University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, and many others.
He played a key role in promoting biomedical engineering prosthetics and orthotics education in Malaysia and the pioneer who founded the Bachelor degree program in Biomedical Engineering (Prosthetics and Orthotics) in response to the demand in Malaysia for engineering techniques that could improve the quality of life of disabled individuals. He established engineering@UM Industrial Innovation Centre worth of RM230 million in value generation at Faculty of Engineering and launched by Higher Education Minister. First of its kind in this region and the collaboration is across diverse sector to develop new technologies and products, as part of new academic-partnership to develop new funding streams for the University.
He is the President of MSB, which is affiliated with the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB). As part of this portfolio, he managed and supervise the day-to-day activities of the Society including decision making on matters affecting its running within the general policy laid down by the general meeting as well actively involved in activities organised by MSB.
Giving more than fifty keynote, plenary and invited talks at international conferences, symposiums and workshops regarding prosthetics technologies in biomedical engineering all over the world. He currently serves on the advisory board of several international journals.
At the government level, among others, his expertise in the field of biomechanics has been recognized through my appointment as the leader and chairman of the project to establish the Engineering Standard Practice of National Occupational Skills Standards for Prosthetist/Orthotist Rehabilitation Engineers and Prosthetic/Orthotic Technologists. The standard has been approved and endorsed by the Malaysian government and is used by its Ministry of Human Resources. He also served as Technical advisor for Majlis Amanah Rakyat and the Chairman of Hala Tuju Prostetik dan Ortotik Malaysia
To this end He wholeheartedly recognize the importance of working closely with other engineers, scientist and scholars and he dedicated a significant amount of time to fostering relationships that can offer real long-term benefits to all parties involved and also to the nation.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Wan Abu Bakar is a well-known creative writer who has published a novel, short stories, poems, as well as academic books and articles on Malay literature in Malaysia and Indonesia under the pen name Irwan Abu Bakar. He is an associate editor of Dewan Sastera, which is Malaysia’s top literary magazine. He owns the publishing company Esastera Enterprise. He promoted e-literature in Malaysia since 2002 through the portal e-Sastera.com which is currently very active in the Facebook. In 2010, he set up a society for e-literature activists, the Persatuan Aktivis E-sastera, Malaysia (E-SASTERA) and has been the President of the society since. He is also the Head Coordinator for the Gabungan Komunitas Sastra ASEAN (GAKSA) and the World Association of Literary Communities (WALC). He has also served as a Panel member for a number of literary awards in Malaysia. Besides, has also served as the Vice President of NUMERA, a regional literary society for Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.
WAN NUR-ILYANI WAN ABU BAKAR, BHSc
General Manager
Ilya graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Human Science (BHSc) degree in English Language and Literature from the International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM). Upon graduation, she went into publication and event management businesses. She joined BioApps in 2017 as the first Assistant General Manager (AGM) and was heavily involved in the sales and marketing activities of the company. In January 2017, she was appointed the General Manager and continues to lead the sales and marketing team of BioApps. Ilya has a good general knowledge of BioApps’ products and fabrication techniques, and a unique approach to business management. Due to her outstanding strength in social communication, Ilya gets along very well with members of the staff as well as BioApps’ clients who are mainly medical doctors and nurses. She also has an extraordinary skill in managing BioApps’ patient population that is very diverse and dynamic, who comes from various social and geographical backgrounds, ranging from children, active adults, athletes, geriatrics, and members of the Malaysian Military’s Warfare units.. In general, Ilya is creative, articulate, proactive, and organised. Her motto in life: “The Empire State is not built in a day”.
IRFAN ALI
BSc (P&O), Senior Prosthetist and Orthotist, Clinical Specialist
Irfan obtained a degree in Bachelor of Prosthetic & Orthotic Sciences (Honors), University of Peshawar, Pakistan in 2007. He is recognised as an Orthopaedic Technologist (ISPO – Category II Professional) and a Certified Prosthetist & Orthotist (ISPO) since then. Irfan has a vast working experience during the period 2008 to February 2017, namely as the Centre Manager and a Prosthetist & Orthotist in P.R.S.P-Chal Rehab Centre D.H.Q Hospital Battgram, as a Certified Prosthetist & Orthotist in the Pakistan Institute of Prosthetics and Orthotics Sciences (PIPOS), and as a Senior Prosthetist and Orthotist in Malaysia since June 2011 until now. He also conducted training courses in Ottobock and Ossur on various topics related to the field of rehabilitation between 2012 to 2015. Irfan joined Bioapps as a Senior Prosthetist and Orthotist since April 2017 and served as its Technical Head for 10 months. Since joining BioApps, he had also conducted a number of courses including a course at UMMC on the topic “Transtibial and Transfemoral Prostheses” in September 2017. Irfan currently resides in Kuala Lumpur with his wife and two children. He is a detailed, cooperative, and friendly person. His motto in life: “The only impossible journey is the one you never begin”.
NOOR ASLIZA AHMAD
BBEng (P&O), Prosthetist Orthotist Engineer / Clinical Specialist
Asliza graduated in BBEng (P&O) from University of Malaya (UM) in 2014. She worked with a prosthetic and orthotic service providing company as a prosthetist and orthotist (PO) since then. After almost a year working in that company, she moved to BioApps as a PO in January 2015. At the same time, she is doing her MEngSc course at UM. Noor Asliza binti Ahmad is skilful, handy, and broad-minded. Her motto in life: “In every success story, you will find someone who has made a courageous decision”.
SAIFUL SYAZWAN MOHD FADZIL

Saiful graduated in BBEng (P&O) from University of Malaya (UM) in 2014. He started working as a prosthetist and orthotist (PO) in BioApps as a PO in January 2015. At the same time, he is doing his second degree MEngSc at UM. Saiful Syazwan Bin Mohd Fadzil is skilful, handy and broad-minded. Amir joined BioApps in January 2018 as a Handyman and Runner. Amir Nur Rashid Bin Ahmad is hardworking, speedy, and bright. His motto in life: “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going”.
HANIE NADIA SHASMIN
BBEng, MEngSc, Technical Consultant
Nadia is a research officer at the Centre for Applied Biomechanics (CAB), Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya (UM). She received her BBEng (2006) and MEngSc (2012) degrees in biomedical engineering from UM. Since graduation, she had served as a biomedical engineering tutor UM (2006-2010), research officer UKM (2010-2012), and then back to UM as a research officer at CAB. Her current research work covers prosthetics and orthotics biomechanics, focusing on gait analysis. Hanie Nadia binti Shasmin joined BioApps in 2015 as a Technical Consultant for special projects. She is disciplined, fair, and honest. Her motto in life: “We know what we are, but know not what we may be”.
Dr NOORANIDA ARIFIN

Technical Consultant
Dr. Anida is a senior lecturer at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya. She received her BBEng and PhD degrees in biomedical engineering from University of Malaya and her MSc degree in prosthetics and orthotics from Eastern Michigan University, USA. Her current research interests cover prosthetics and orthotics biomechanics, in particular, focusing on the balance mechanism with prosthetics intervention following lower-limb amputation. Dr Nooranida binti Arifin joined BioApps in 2015 as a Technical Consultant for special projects and academic research. She is consistent, trustworthy, and diplomatic. Her motto in life: “Always do your best. What you plant now, you will harvest later”.
